The Lion King at Temple Hoyne Buell Theatre

The tale of The Lion King is set in motion in a vast savanna territory in Africa; based in The Pride Lands, the teenage Prince Simba leads a free and easy life, before tragedy strikes because of the deeds of his dishonorable uncle Scar and his desire to overthrow Simba's father, Mufasa, and become ruler himself. The first act's course of incidents leads to Simba's exile from his home and the story of his ultimate return to retake his throne and his place as King.

The Lion King, since its formation, had to maintain accuracy using real-life sources from real African society and history given its setting. The plot itself is actually founded on previously existing African warriors and real happenings – Simba actually equates to the animal equivalent of Sundiata Mansa, the Emperor of the Imperial Mali who was aptly named The Lion of Mali.

Julie Taymor, the first woman in Broadway history to win a Tony for Best Direction of a Musical, made sure to be respectful of East Asian and African cultural sources, especially outfits used, which paved the way for an accurate Broadway production of the musical. The outfits in particular are gracious representations of several traditional tribes in Africa, an example of such is Simba’s outfit in the show which in fact inspired by Kenyan Maasi fighters' attire. Just like the late 1994 film, the remarkable musical compositions created by Elton John and Tim Rice pays homage to its African heritage, with the live adaptation even including songs with lyrics that are sung either in part or fully in African languages including Swahili and Zulu. Additionally, the African theme is also evident in dance numbers, with a lot of the numbers consistently featuring the grace of Bali-inspired choreography.

The 3D puppetry, song composition, and superb acting all merge effortlessly to make up an astounding musical.
