The tale of The Lion King begins in a vast savanna territory in Africa; set in The Pride Lands, the young heir Simba is destined to succeed as King, before tragedy strikes because of the deeds of his dishonorable uncle Scar and his desire to rule the Pride Lands and become King himself. The first half's sequence of events leads to Simba's exile from his home and the tale of his eventual homecoming to retake his throne and his place as King.
The musical, since its formation, had to maintain accuracy using real-life sources from real African culture and history given its setting. The story itself is actually based on real African heroes and real events – Simba as an example is the animal counterpart of Sundiata Mansa, the leader of the Imperial Mali who was justly named The Lion of Mali.
Julie Taymor, the first female in the history of Broadway to win a Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical, made sure to be respectful of East Asian and African cultural sources, particularly design, which resulted in a precise live adaptation of The Lion King. The outfits in particular are gracious depictions of several ethnic groups in Africa, a portrayal of which is Simba’s garb in the show which is actually based on Kenyan Maasi warriors' armor. Just like the late 1994 motion picture, the fantastic musical compositions created by Elton John and Tim Rice stays respectful to its African inspiration, with the musical even adding numbers with lyrics that are sung either partly or entirely in African tongue like Swahili and Zulu. Additionally, the African theme is also noticeable in choreography, with a lot of the performances consistently featuring the grace of Bali-inspired movements.
The 3D puppetry, African influence, and lifelike stage design all blend together so well to deliver an awe-inspiring musical.
