“You don’t know about me, without you have read a book by the name of ‘The Adventures of Tom Sawyer’, but that ain’t no matter.”
The thing is, we know of him. We know his unique voice, his laid-back style, his dry humour, and insanely compelling body of work. We know “the nation’s one true comic legendary genius”, and we adore him.
Now, finally, after nearly eight decades, the one-man show bursting with Mark Twain’s “uproariously funny”, “pungently wise” humour, and biting social commentary that has taken the world by storm is coming right to you! That’s it, Denver - Hal Holbrook’s ‘Mark Twain Tonight!’ is coming to the Buell Theatre on 31 January 2026, featuring the only actor ever authorized to perform it - Richard Thomas!

Mark Twain Tonight!, a theatrical tapestry woven from threads of anecdotes, observations, and passages from his massive collection of works, delves deep into that wry humour and irreverent observations the world love so much about legendary writer Mark Twain.
The iconic one-man performance had its origins in a show Hal Holbrook performed with his wife, after which he perfected it as a stand-alone show in the 1950s. After a lengthy run of 174 performances in the Lambs Club’s theatre as an off-Broadway engagement, Mark Twain Tonight! finally premiered at the Longacre Theatre on Broadway in 1966, winning a Tony Award and receiving an Emmy Award nomination. Hal Holbrook retired from the show in 2017 - after a whopping 63 consecutive years of performing Mark Twain Tonight!, and now finally, the much-adored show is back on stage, featuring the award-winning Richard Thomas - personally authorized by Hal Holbrook himself.
The 2025/2026 run of Mark Twain Tonight! is currently on tour, and is set to wrap up near the end of February 2026 in Findlay, Ohio.
Audiences can look forward to an authentic, captivating, varied, and compelling experience, delivered by one of theatre’s finest actors - complete with Mark Twain’s signature white suit, bushy moustache, messy hair, and cigar.
Relevance? For sure - the production is continuously under scrutiny, keeping the material fresh, even after all this time. Wit and wisdom? You’ve got it - Mark Twain was a master of theatrical passive aggressiveness, and with Richard Thomas’ impeccable delivery and incredible skill in capturing Mark Twain’s unique voice, you’ll be on the edge of your seat from the moment the curtain rises until the lights have dimmed! A must-see? Absolutely - this is a bucket-list kind of production, so don’t let the opportunity pass you by!
