The musical Lion King tells the story of the struggles of the young Lion Prince Simba, who before his time has no choice but to accept his role of succeeding as the King of the Pride Lands due to unjust killing of his father, Mufasa. Mufasa, who is a beloved King by the people of the territory he rules, gets stabbed in the back by from Scar, Simba’s uncle, which leaves Simba without a father. This forces the young prince into into exile for years on end, and jumpstarts the Prince's personal change and his sudden return to his land and his seat on the throne.
Inspired by the original 1994 film of the same title produced by Disney, The Lion King musical was beautifully adapted to the Broadway platform by director Julie Taymor and the breathtaking ensemble and production crew. Its premiere in the 90s was a fresh addition to theater, being received positively by critics. Greg Evans of Variety elaborates on The Lion King with unequivocal opinions in his review, stating that “Julie Taymor's direction of this Broadway mainstay is a wonder, a assured box office hit unquestionable in its cultural and historical foundation. Exceeding expectations as a film follow-up, the stage showing enhances on nearly every aspect of the hit 90s cartoon motion picture, from design elements and plot to Lebo M's score and the newly African-based pop numbers of Elton John and Tim Rice."
Disney's The Lion King was also met with the ultimate commendations from theatergoers. A post in particular points to how this successful musical can aptly be referred to as “The musical that beats them all”, posting how he felt that “the show was spectacular. It was visually stunning and the music would give you goosebumps. The crafted 3D puppets really brought the characters to life.” Most viewers who have attended the shows over the previous 20 years agree that despite being a second retelling of a film, Disney's The Lion King went above and beyond the original.
