The Lion King at Temple Hoyne Buell Theatre

The saga of Disney’s The Lion King is set in motion in a vast savanna territory in Africa; living in The Pride Lands, the young lion Simba leads a free and easy life, before betrayal occurs because of the work of his jealous uncle Scar and his desire to rule the Pride Lands and become the ruling monarch himself. The first act's series of incidents leads to Simba's banishment from The Pride Lands and the tale of his eventual homecoming to bring peace to his lands and citizens.

The Lion King, since its inception, had to maintain accuracy using real-life sources from real African society and historical texts given the play's context. The plot itself is actually founded on previously existing African heroes and actual happenings – Simba actually equates to the animal version of Sundiata Mansa, the founder of the Malian Empire who was justly called The Lion of Mali.

Julie Taymor, the first female in the history of Broadway to gain a Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical, completed in-depth research on African and East Asian history, specifically with design, which resulted in a faultless live adaptation of The Lion King. The outfits when seen are perfect portrayals of a few indigenous tribes in Africa, a portrayal of which is Simba’s outfit in the musical which in fact based on Kenyan Maasi fighters' armor. Just like the late 1994 motion picture, the iconic musical compositions written by Elton John and Tim Rice stays respectful to its African heritage, with the musical even including compositions with lyrics that are sung either partially or completely in African languages like Swahili and Zulu. Additionally, the African inspiration is also noticeable in dance numbers, with several of the dances consistently featuring the seamlessness of Bali-inspired choreography.

The 3D puppetry, song composition, and stellar performances all work in harmony to deliver an astounding musical.
