Wicked is an enchanting story that delivers incredible performances, breathtaking scenic design, and an incredible cast! The music has also transcended into the mainstream scene. Audiences can look forward to the outstanding fan favorites, such as “Defying Gravity,” “For Good,” “Popular,” and many more! This award-winning musical has taken the world by storm since its premiere in 2003! Two decades later, the show remains one of the most sought-after musicals on Broadway and across the world! Wicked is based on the 1900 novel The Wonder Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum and the 1995 novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. The story takes place in the Land of Oz, long before the arrival of Dorothy Gale.
Two witches, Elphaba and Glinda, attend the Shiz University and become roommates. At first, Elphaba, a witch with green skin, clashes with the blonde and beautiful Glinda. But soon, they developed an extraordinary friendship. But their relationship goes through many turmoils, including having different points of view, the same love interest, and opposite reactions to the corrupt government. Eventually, Elphaba has been branded as the Wicked Witch of the West, while the Wizard gives Glinda the name Glinda the Good. This incredible backstory provides a compelling look into the lives of two witches who play significant roles in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
Premiering on Broadway in 2003, Wicked became one of the most-watched musicals in Broadway history. Award-winning composer and lyricist Stephen Schwartz is responsible for Wicked’s captivating music and lyrics. Meanwhile, Winnie Holzman is responsible for the musical’s enchanting storyline. For its original production, Wicked also brought in the top talents in town, including director Joe Mantello, scenic designer Eugene Lee, costume designer Susan Hilferty, lighting designer Kenneth Posterm, and sound designer Tony Meola. Aside from an incredible creative team, Wicked also featured an outstanding cast, which included Broadway icons Idina Menzel as Elphaba and Kristin Chenoweth as Glinda. Meanwhile, Joel Grey played the role of the Wizard.
“Sit back, relax, and trust the process. It still defies gravity!” – The Guardian
The highly acclaimed original production garnered numerous accolades, including three Tony Awards and seven Drama Desk Awards. The original cast also recorded an original soundtrack album, leading to a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album.
By 2005, the musical went on its first North American tour, followed by a production in London’s West the following year. In 2009, the musical went back on tour, followed by multiple European tours throughout the next several years. This 2023, Wicked embarked on its third U.S. tour, which includes a coveted stop in Buell Theatre. For viewers who are keen on watching the 2024 production of Wicked, you can anticipate the show to feature all the stops and still be as brilliant as its original production.
The touring team features a stellar cast, which includes Olivia Valli as Elphaba, Celia Hottenstein as Glinda, Timothy Shew as The Wizard, and more. Attendees can also look forward to an exemplary show featuring all the fan-favorite hits, such as “The Wizard and I,” “What Is This Feeling?” “Popular” and “Defying Gravity,” among others.
If you’re wondering if the touring production is worth watching, you are in for an excellent awakening! Arts Hub published a recent review of Wicked, and it has nothing but good words, “On stage, Wicked remains a feast for the eyes and the ears, and gives audiences just what it says on the box, a big blockbuster Broadway musical.” The writer added that the sets and costumes are quite exquisite, “mashing together elements of steampunk, theatrical glitz, and Hogwarts aesthetics – and the thrilling ‘Defying Gravity’ remains arguably the greatest musical theatre Act One closing number of all time.”
Meanwhile, the Sydney Morning Herald praised the heartwarming tale for its “splendor costumes and fantabulous sets.” The article went on to say that the real star of the show is the stage itself. The musical’s trappings, which include humongous mechanical dragon spreads and steampunk-themed details, provide audiences with a breathtaking visual experience. “Susan Hilferty’s costumes are as good a reason alone to see Wicked, a dazzling collection of sculptural but stylish confections.”
“Stylish and bombastic.” – Timeout London
