In Beetlejuice, the main character, Betelgeuse, is a bio-exorcist demon who is infatuated with returning to the world of the living. Once Betelgeuse gets to know that Barbara and Adam Maitland have fallen through the floor of their beloved home, he sees a chance to attain what he wants. The recently fallen will be allowed to leave if they can persuade a living person to say their name three times. His meticulously planned strategy quickly falls through after he learns that one of the new housemates is the sassy and ingenious Lydia.
She places Betelgeuse through some tests that he would have not expected, and wins over the hearts of the Maitlands in the process. As this offbeat group of social misfits tries to find common ground and define their own identities, hilarious tomfoolery ensue, whether they are dead or alive.
