The musical’s journey included a pre-Broadway showcase in Denver from August 17 to October 1, 2017. Broadway was graced with the musical’s presence as previews commenced on February 22, 2018, at the iconic St. James Theatre, followed by its grand opening night on March 22, 2018. The creative team saw this endeavor as a chance to plunge into the figurines' backstories and motivations. Consequently, several dynamic action moments from the original film were trimmed, providing more time to center on the emotional challenges of the characters. As a result, the musical runs for about twenty minutes longer than its cinematic original.
