“A generous dose of contemporary spirit sure to heat up even the most restless and wintry of souls.” - The New York Times

Clear up your weekend plans, as The Hip Hop Nutcracker will be running at the Buell Theatre from November 17 to November 18, 2023.

Similar to the original story, Maria-Clara and the Nutcracker Prince go on a dream adventure in The Hip Hop Nutcracker, where they battle a pack of mice, travel to the land of sweets, and discover the true meaning of the Christmas season. Typically set in 19th century, this beloved narrative by E.T.A. Hoffmann has an unexpected twist - the world is now replaced with the dynamic sights and noises of modern New York City. In the production, this is masterfully accomplished through the use of innovative digital graffiti and other on-screen visuals.

“The longer the show went on, the more all this modern choreography started to resemble ballet - the two dozen dancers demonstrated the same level of gracefulness, strength, and animated expressions that typify the Nutcracker and make it a joy to watch. The production photos do not do the production justice. The ensemble earned a standing ovation,” Portland Mercury shares in a review.
